Suhaila Online Classes, Week 13
Jul. 22nd, 2011 02:12 pm So after my last entry things were a little crazy with a great show on AntiCanada Day and an awesome 30th birthday and more righteous shenanigans. Then I had an awful cold, but even then I managed to walk a bit and I did try to practice, but it felt like going through the motions. Which is why when I started practicing again on Tuesday, I went straight to a Level One class in singles, of which I did 37 minutes, AND I did 30 minutes of the earliest Jamila class. I realized I have a tendency to freeze in fast moving classes and want to go to a corner and work on the same move that's giving me trouble for half an hour - which is a problem in live classes and workshops, where the instructor reasonably wants you to keep up with everybody. I also had trouble with the pushups in the Level One class; tithenai suggested I do modifications like half pushups - pushups from my knees. Though I am quite proud of my adeptness at plank, thanks to yoga.
Wednesday I tried Dance Movement, which was a mistake, I should have waited a day in between due to the physical rigor of the class. I ended up doing 12.5 minutes. I then decided to have fun with the Jamila class, doing the first 11 minutes, catching nuances that escaped me the first time, then focusing on the zilling of step, forward, back, forward for 10 minutes, using a right, left on the step and 3 longas on the hips. It's the first time I've done an advanced beginner zil layer; previously I've been doing mostly zils with single moves like pelvic locks, and once or twice zils with Basic Egyptian and just once with pivot shift step.
Thursday I worked with the first 17 minutes of the Jamila class and then got stuck at layering the Arabic steps with zils. So I pulled out my Jamila 1 dvd and worked with the Arabic steps section. They're actually not hard, just needs some extra practice which I've neglected because I've been working on getting the pivot shift step right. I also need to learn the running choo choo shimmies for the Jamila class.
Today I was exhausted by trying to find housing, so I didn't practice, though I did walk down the hill and back up, which was actually easier than it was a few days ago - I'd been walking a couple of miles daily from my home to the skytrain, ever since I read this article on persephone.com on how everybody walks everywhere in Europe; a few of my friends want to hike Grouse Mountain on a regular basis, and I'd like to be able to keep up with them should I ever join them - by Vancouver standards I have poor walking legs, though still better than my mother and sister.
