On Monday I went to see my doctor. She's removing the medication she'd been tapering off so as of Monday I'll no longer be taking it. She scolded me into taking one of my optional medications more regularly.
I went to Bonsor to take a hatha class. I was able to do a lot of the really advanced postures and did modifications when needed. It's about the breath, I realized. Like the climactic scene in Craig Thompson's Habibi.
I'd been debating the last few weeks whether I'd go to see Instant Theatre's December shows. I was afraid of the stress of meeting a lot of new people. But as I got up the stairs to the skytrain back from hatha I decided to go. I was insanely early, of course. I'd always thought the Havana's shows took place in the back room, like the Heritage Grill, but in fact they have a tiny theatre inside. I liked the first set of long form improv; I left because I was tired, but I would have stayed for the other two sets if I'd had more energy. It snowed in Coquitlam while it was dry in Vancouver.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday I stayed shut in by the snow. Worked on dance, music and writing. Channeling a recent obsessive infatuation into narrative seemed to do the trick of catharsis. I'm looking forward to 2013 to be a year of realistic expectations.
Yesterday was a dull day, fell in and out of sleep. I'd been wanting to go to a yin class at Bonsor but it was dark and rainy.
Why is yoga so powerful? Why does stretching in a certain way affect people so deeply? I like pilates but it doesn't affect me at such a mood level.
I talked to Ma. "Ya Nabi Salam Alaikha" is a staple of milads in Bangladesh, though it wasn't played after Maghrib azan in the old days of BTV, as I had mistakenly thought.
Watched some improv last night. It's interesting to see the cultural assumptions in "apolitical" comedy.
I derived some morbid satisfaction from reading a female reviewer in the NYT give Rushdie the hammering he so richly deserved. It made me think of how differently Pratchett had conducted himself in his private and public life.
This week was too humid in Vancouver and too enervating to do hard core drilling, so I mostly focused on drilling Jamila steps with zils. I still have trouble with the Basic Egyptian open spin - I'm trying to remember to spot while doing the turn and doing the foot placement correctly. I started my first Three Quarter class on Saturday, did 62 minutes and stopped not because I was exhausted but because I was having trouble coordinated the shimmy with the footwork. I repeated the Plies class this week and this time got to 22.5 minutes. I'm thinking in the fall I'll drop the Dance Movement classes and take ballet and jazz Tuesday nights at Coal Harbour  Community Centre - I might be auditioning for a couple of contemporary dance programs in 2013; for the next few weeks though, I'll do what I can with the Dance Movement classes.Theatre classes went well; we'll be memorizing a couple of songs, we're doing character work and scene creation.

On Saturday I danced 54 minutes of a Level One Singles ( on the up), till my butt refused to cooperate. On Sunday I did a full one hour beginner yoga video from Youtube. Monday I did 47 minutes of the first Jamila class. Tuesday I did 18 minutes of a Dance Movement class on plies. Wednesday I did 44 min of a Level One class (on the down) plus the 3 minute cooldown; I think next time I do a Level one class I'll take a five minute breather between the warmup and the drills; the warmup is getting easier for me to do. Friday morning I worked on some Jamila combos from the first class; in the evening I did a hatha yoga class and bought BKS Iyengar's book on pranayama, which I'm more interested in as a singer than as a dancer. I also did two classes with Theatre Terrific, which were some serious workouts in terms of movement and voice; inshallah I'll be performing with them in the Fringe Festival in September. I had band on Friday, and we got a lot of work done on four songs.
I'm not fasting this Ramadan because I'm on a medication that affects my blood sugar and makes me thirsty. I did go to iftar at the tiny mosque on Commercial and 10th; I would have liked to have stayed for Esha and tarabi but I had to leave to make sure I caught the bus home on time. I'm hoping inshallah to go to some more iftars at mosques and gatherings this month.
