Can I inquire as to what prompted this? I found her blog but all I can see is a list of 90s songs that are about the opposite of music snobbery. (At least to me--Pearl Jam is pretty mainstream.)
She wrote a satirical post about how cool mainstream rock was in the 90s, when in reality she's very much anti-mainstream rock. It's difficult to explain how infuriating her ongoing music snobbery is when you're a FOB from Bangladesh where mainstream 90s' rock is all you could access due to distribution issues. Sigh. I think I need to write that post on what a wretched thing it is to shame people because of their music tastes. As if I don't have enough headaches on my head. As redrose commented on my LJ, "Look at her, she's so special listening to special music that the rest of us have never even heard of."
My lifelong best friend is a punk rocker and a drummer, and while he's not much of a snob because he's too musically curious (or at least, he grew out of his snobbery sometime around his 17th birthday, perhaps due to his grudging respect for my pop sensibilities) his musican friends sometimes were, and so I grew some armor regarding that a while ago. And the snobs I know are SO snobby that my level for rock snobbery is very high. So actually? Anyone who's a fan of Sarah McLaughlin doesn't have a leg to stand on in terms of rock snobbery, not because Ms. McLaughlin isn't a good musician, but because she's really mainstream. Marcotte's no insane blogger who's already declared "over" a band that was formed ten minutes ago.
I say this to make you feel better, not to sound like an even bigger snob. I'm very firm on my "no such things as guilty pleasures" stance, and I agree that it's obnoxious to shame people for the cultural products they like, no matter what. Heck, I grew up in Maine in the 70s and 80s, and until we got MTV I didn't have access to much more than mainstream rock, either. I think that while you have a particular reason to be annoyed by her music snobbery, her music snobbery is also just annoying! AND, not very well founded.
I mean, if you want to be a 90s music snob then you have to start talking about how Nirvana were only good on Bleach and the only good band at Lilth was L7 (though they were past their prime) and the whole "no band has ever made a good album after their third one" and all of that kind of nonsense. She's not even good at being a music snob!
